The subpannonian type of a well with a lifting mechanism called "čaplja" can be found in the area expanding from Vienna to Romania. In the villages underneath the mountain Donačka gora these types of wells could be built at farms in the low-lying areas, where they came upon water after only a few meters of digging. With a stone, functioning as a counterpoise, fixed to the lever, lifting up a bucketful of water was fairly easy. The wooden bucket has a bung which is there to make sure that the water doesn't spill while its being pulled up. All rights of this site are reserved. Author: Boštjan Burger, July 2005 |
