Term "Lagoon" is derived from the Italian "laguna", which refers to the shallow sea waters around Venice: The Lagoon of Venice.
Lagoons are shallow, usually elongated bodies of salt or brackish water separated from a larger body of water by a shallow or exposed shoal, coral reef, or similar feature. Coastal lagoons are classified as inland bodies of water.
