Polje is an area of fluvial relief within the karst geomorphic environment. It is the largest depressional karst form, generally with a bottom with fluvial sediments, characterized by a closed perimeter, level bottom and karst hydrology with underground inflow and outflow. Poljes can vary in typology and are classified according to their geological, morphological and hydrological characteristics.
The morphometric criterion for a polje in Slovenian karstology is that the polje is a closed karst depression with a closed marginal slope that is higher than the bottom of the polje. The bottom must be relatively leveled, and the width must reach a minimum dimension of around 400 meters in length.
