Lovrenška jezera(The marsh of Lovrence - lakes of Lovrence) are the largest high peat swampland in Slovenia. The swampland is divided into two parts with a narrow part of the forest. The main characteristic of this marshiness area are 20 lakes, which actually are not real lakes but depressions in a rock, which were covered by water. The marshiness area is located on the mountain ridge (altitude of 1520 m ~ 5000 ft.). The moore is a 'mineral' swampland and was the result of the rolling hill country with the impermeable geological grounding. The name 'high moore' is not beacuse of the altitude but of the slow and progressive lading of the peat.
The swampland developed here about 8000 years ago, after the Ice Ages. The area has no contact with groundwater and it is fed by precipitations alone. The depth of the lakes is about 1m and the layer of the peat is about 3 m thick in the central part of the moor.
