Slovenian KAMNIK-SAVINJA ALPS

Kamnik is a town in the northern part of the Central Slovenia region, historically belonging to Upper Carniola (Gorenjska). The town has 13,700 inhabitants and is the center of the Municipality of Kamnik, which has a population of 30,000 (2022). The town stretches along the Kamniška Bistrica river, which originates in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. In addition to the old town center, Kamnik consists of several urban areas: Bakovnik, Duplica, Fužine, Jeranovo, Novi trg, Perovo, Šutna, Zaprice, and Žale.

Zaprice Castle

Its cultural and historical sights and the old town center give it a pleasant homeliness. In Kamnik, the Bavarian Counts of Andechs minted their own currency. During the Middle Ages, the town was an important trading center on the route between Vienna and Trieste.

Mali grad Kamnik

By the end of the 19th century, the old town center became an important craft and industrial hub. During World War II, industry developed significantly, particularly in the fields of chemistry and metalworking. Due to its proximity to the capital and excellent transport links, Kamnik became attractive for immigration and is today considered one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Slovenia.
