Avignon is situated at the junction of the Durance and Rhone
rivers with about 180.000 inhabitants. The town was the capital of Gauls
but under the Romans lost its impotrance. Avignon is a walled medieval
town. Its inner core is enclosed with 5 km wall with fortifications with
39 towers and 7 gates. Avinon was a Papal City in a time from 1309 to 1377,
great remain of that time is Papal Palace. Avignon is world famous for
its festival. Festival city becomes vivid in July when street performers
from all over the France come to Avignon.
Across the Rhone is situaded Villeneuve-les-Avignon which had
a role to guard the frontier of France when Avignon was joined to the Holy
Roman Empire. |
