Vipava is a charming town situated at the unique delta-shaped source of the Vipava River. Modern Vipava was first mentioned in historical records in 1367.

The town is also the birthplace of notable historical figures, including the Austrian diplomat Sigismund von Herberstein (1486–1566) and the Slovenian Protestant writer Sebastian Krelj (1538–1567).
