The settlement of Goreljek developed from a former mountain pasture used by Koprivnica farmers. In the summer, it still operates as a living pasture where cattle graze, and some farmers continue to produce traditional milk and cheese products.
There is a small permanent population, and the vast majority of the buildings (over 100) are holiday homes. These surround the Goreljek Peat Bog, where the Triglav National Park has established an educational nature trail.
Goreljek consists of Upper (Zgornji) and Lower (Spodnji) Goreljek. Zgornji Goreljek, surrounded by the spruce forests of Pokljuka, lies at an altitude of approximately 1,250 m on the sediments of a former lake and moraine soils.
