360° Surround Photography: Neža's Waterfall

THE NEŽICA WATERFALL. This tufa waterfall is named after a young girl named Neža from a local legend. While many travelers pass it quickly on the road from Kočevje to Brod na Kolpi, it is a site worth visiting intentionally.

The Nežica falls actually consist of three major waterfalls, each approximately 10 meters (33 ft) high, characterized by tufa (limestone) formations. After rainfall, the water falls like a wide fan over the tufa rocks, which are covered with a rich, green carpet of moss. This moss beautifully emphasizes the whiteness of the falling water. In addition to the three main falls, there are also two smaller cascades, about 2-3 meters high.

Access & Trails

The middle waterfall falls almost to the edge of the main road, so please be careful when passing or parking nearby. From the bridge, a well-trodden trail leads uphill toward the source of the brook. A 5-minute walk will take you to the upper waterfall, which flows over lush moss in several cascades.

For those seeking more, a hidden gem awaits below the road. Near an abandoned mill—where the tufa-rich water has literally "petrified" the old mill wheel over the years—lies the most powerful of the falls, dropping 10 meters into a serene pool.

The Legend of Neža

Local legend tells of a young girl named Neža who was watering a pair of oxen near Drežnik. The water suddenly swallowed them into the depths. After a heavy storm, the water at the spring of the "Prifarski jarek" threw out an ox-yoke wrapped in the girl's hair. Since then, the spring and the waterfall have been known as Nežica.
