The exhibition "feudal dwelling culture"

The most exquisite rooms of the castle are found in the first floor and are mainly furnished with furniture and works of art - a legacy of the Herberstein family. The Herbersteins brought them to Ptuj from narby Vurberk Castle in 1907, and from Hrastovec Castle in 1925. After the Second World War, some exhibits were brought to Ptuj from castles in its environs, especially from the Baroque mansion in Dornava.

The rooms are arranged in order to create a historical ambience. The south-eastern wing was renovated by the Leslies in 1692 and the guest rooms were embellished with richly stuccoed ceilings. The legacy of the Leslies comprises, among other items, precious early 17th century Brussels tapestries with scenes depicting the Odyssey; and late 17th century French tapestries.

An important collection is that of family portraits of the Herbersteins from Hrastovec Castle. The paintings bear inscriptions and present the historically important members of the family, among others Sigismund of Herberstein, a military leader and diplomat, who was twice entrusted with diplomatc missions to Vasily II, the Prince of Moscow, and wrote a book on his travels, entitled ƄRerum moscoviticarum comentariiƀ. He is dressed in a Turkish caftan, a gift of Sulaiman the Magnificent, Sultan of Turkey, dating from 1541.

By 1680, the Leslies had rebuilt the north-western wing of the castle and had arranged a ceremonial hall and chapel within. The ceremonial hall exhibits a collection of paintings called "Turqueries". They were commisioned by Johann Josef Herberstein (1630-1690/92) in 1666, upon returning from a diplomatic mission to Constantinople. The paintings portray famous Turkish and European commanders and dignitaries, belles from the Sultan's harem and men and women from exotic countries in picturesque dress. (the ceremonial hall is temporarily closed due to the renovation works)
