SQUARE-HOUSE This Venetian-Gothic house was built in the 14th century on the fringe of the city walls. The former St. Peter's Square, where the building is situated, played an important part in the life of the Koper fishermen and salters. The Square ended with a large salt repository accessible directly from the harbour, in which fishing boats were moored. The building with protruding upper floor, casa veneta a gheffo, rests on wooden incised corbels. The ground floor was made of irregular stone blocks, while the storey was built of brick. In the middle of the brick façade there is a rich Gothic three-mullioned window with the two three-foliate tops separated by a small column. On each side of the central window there are three-foliate two-mullioned windows, the right one with a stone ledge resting on corbels. On the right side of the façade, a stone ring has been preserved. The upper part of the side façade, bordering on Levja ulica (Lion Street), is adorned with a couple of two-mullioned windows with three-foliate arches: the monophores were later slightly reconstructed. |
