Veliki and Mali Predoselj are picturesque gorges of the Kamniška Bistrica River, carved into a narrow, deep ravine located only about one kilometre from the river’s source. They are among the most distinctive natural attractions in the lower part of the Kamniška Bistrica valley, where the river cuts through solid limestone and forms striking geomorphological features.
Formation and geomorphology
The gorges were created by the erosive power of the river, which over thousands of years deepened its channel into limestone and dolomite. The result is a narrow, several‑metre‑deep canyon with pools, small waterfalls, smoothly polished rock walls, and characteristic erosion potholes.
-
Veliki Predoselj is the wider and deeper section, where the river has carved a pronounced narrow passage.
-
Mali Predoselj is narrower and more confined, with more prominent rock constrictions.
Above both gorges lie two large fallen boulders, wedged between the canyon walls like natural bridges. They were created by a rockfall in which the boulders became trapped between the sides of the gorge.
Historical background
In the early 20th century, Predoselj was known primarily as a waterfall on the Kamniška Bistrica. The waterfall did not fall over a rock step but over a mass of accumulated gravel, which had piled up behind jammed logs and branches. This natural barrier raised the riverbed and created the waterfall.
In 1953, after more than 60 years, a swollen river washed away all the deposited material, causing the waterfall to disappear and giving the gorges their present form. This event is a notable example of how quickly a river can reshape its course and surrounding relief.
Access and visitor experience
A marked path leads to Veliki Predoselj, descending over a wooden footbridge to the bottom of the gorge. This allows a safe and close view into the canyon, where visitors can observe:
-
the speed and force of the river,
-
smoothly polished rock walls,
-
emerald‑blue pools,
-
the natural rock bridges above the gorge.
Mali Predoselj is slightly less accessible but can be viewed from nearby paths and vantage points along the river.
Natural value
Veliki and Mali Predoselj are part of the protected Kamniška Bistrica area, representing an important example of:
-
river erosion,
-
geomorphological processes,
-
natural rockfall formations,
-
a preserved aquatic ecosystem.
Due to the proximity of the source, the water is exceptionally clean, cold, and oxygen‑rich, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.
