Arles was founded by the Massilians in the 6th century BC. The settlement was on the crossroads of the Rhone River and the Roman Aurelian Route. Arles was the river port and the first city of Provence in a time of the Roman Empire. The feature of the city is The Arenes - Roman amphitheatre. The charming old town (Vielle Ville) is a tourist site today. Famous resident of Arles was painter Vincent van Gogh. Arles is a gateway to the Camargue which is the top producer of rice in France. |
