St. Malo with its walled, medieval nucleus and narrow cobblestone
streets is interesting coastal town of Northern Brittany. It is situated
on the right bank of the estuary of the Rance River at its mouth. The old
town is surrounded by a wide wall that provides a promenade around the
old town nucleus. The town was largely destroyed during World War II. but
it has been well rebuilt. St. Malo is North Brittany's top port and a very
popular summer destination. In St. Malo live 50,000 inhabitants all year-round,
but swells to 200,000 in the summer seazon. Very impressive is a tidal
range. Spring-tides sometimes rise 15 metres above low-water level,
and the sea sometimes washes over the ramparts. |
