Železniki is the economic centre and also the
largest settlement in the Selscica valley. It use to be known by the iron
which was melted in furnaces. The first furnace was mentioned 1422. The
original furnace was in 1826 replaced by a tall blast furnace which ceased
operating in about 1902. It is the only preserved technical monument of
this kind in Slovenia. Acrhtecture of the old part of the settlement is
mainly from the 17th century. Old buildings are marked with
the signposts which make a walk trought the settlement interesting. Near
the funace is a museum.
Železniki actually consist of several connected
settlements along the Selscica river. |
