The Ljubljanica river has many springs which well from the border of the limestone plateau with the Barje basin. The water emerges at several points near the town of Vrhnika after its underground journey through the karst interior.
The most noticeable and historically significant spring groups are located at Močilnik (the source of Mala Ljubljanica), Retovje (the source of Velika Ljubljanica), and the springs at Bistra.
These springs represent the final stage of the "river with seven names," which disappears into the ground several times before finally surfacing as the Ljubljanica.
