Šentjernej is a larger settlement and the municipality centre on the
plain of Šentjernej of the south-western part of Krško basin. Nearby the
settlement is well known monastery of Carthusian monks. The monastery is
the only one of its kind in Slovenia. It was founded by Count of Celje
Herman II in the year 1403. The monastery is closed for visitors but there
is the info centre and open old gothic church of the Holy Trinity. Jožef
Ressel (1793-1857), the inventor of the ship screw propeller worked in
the monastery area as the forester. At the monastery is situated Open-air
museum where it is displayed old farm of the plain of Šentjernej from 19th
century. |
