Razstava ob 10. obletnici smrti dr.
Častni pokrovitelj razstave in spominskega simpozija ob 10. obletnici smrti dr. Janeza Drnovška je predsednik Republike Slovenije Borut Pahor.
Februarja letos (2'018) ineva 10 let od smrti velikega državnika dr. Janeza Drnovška. Razstava v Narodnem muzeju Slovenije celovito predstavlja njegovo osebnost.
The exhibition at the National Museum of Slovenia of a great statesman, Dr Janez Drnovšek.
This February (2018) marks ten years from the death of a great statesman, Dr Janez Drnovšek. The exhibition at the National Museum of Slovenia aims to comprehensively present his unique personality. It includes three different periods that defined the life of Dr Drnovšek: the chairmanship of the Collective Presidency of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia; the four governments of the Republic of Slovenia, a time Slovenia was considered one of the more successful countries in Europe and when the country joined the European Union and NATO; and finally the presidency of the Republic of Slovenia.
The exhibition and the memorial symposium are held under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor.
With his work Dr Drnovšek exceeded what is considered the standard role of a politician. His recognisability, cogency, and personal involvement attracted many foreign dignitaries and personalities to join him his philanthropic endeavours. By calling attention to the growing global divide between the rich and the poor and the need to build the world upon different foundations, he proved that Slovenia, as a new, small country, is able to contribute to the solutions of global political and humanitarian issues. In this way he demonstrated that a president does not merely fulfil a protocol role, but can contribute to the solution of a rising number of conflicts both at home and abroad.
A significant part of Dr Drnovšek’s image is also reflected in his works. Besides his many publications from the field of credit and monetary policies and international relations, he authored several personal works that were translated in several foreign languages. He also wrote a blog under the alias Janez D., using it as a platform for positive thinking, healthy lifestyles, and general changes in habits that he wanted to see as many Slovenians as possible make.
The grand opening of the exhibition was on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the death of Dr Drnovšek, on 22 February 2018 at 6 pm, at the National Museum of Slovenia – Metelkova (Maistrova 1, Ljubljana).
After the opening, a charity auction titled Peace and Good were held at 6:30 pm. The auction will showcase objects from Dr Drnovšek’s estate, offered on sale with the consent of the former president’s family. The proceeds of the auction will go to the Dr Janez Drnovšek Scholarship Fund at the Slovenian Association of Friends of Youth (SAFY), which will provide young people coming from socially disadvantaged environments with the opportunity to obtain education at the secondary school of their choice, helping them on their way to fulfilling their goals.
The following day, on 23 February 2018, an international memorial symposium was held at the same venue. The symposium will feature historians, journalists, and mostly people (from Slovenia and abroad) who accompanied Dr Drnovšek on his political and personal journey.
