I. ROCOCO HALL (second
half of the 18th century). The Rococo style is defined by lightness of
contour and decorativeness and features an interplay of curves and decorative
forms such as scrolled foliage, shells, palmettes, wreaths and flowers,
all in apparent disharmony but taken as a whole offering a uniformly effective
ornamentation. The Rococo style aims at a felicitous interplay of curved
lines with very few sharp edges or corners, while the undulating and bombé
surfaces are covered with ornaments. Individual sections of furniture were
so arched and curved that they could only perform their function when fixed
solidly together. Wood only rarely retains its original colour: it was
usually gilded or glazed, especially in white. The wall paintings, which
are copied from the wallpaper from Brdo Castle near Kranj, show happy pastoral
games, music and dancing |
