L. EMPIRE ROOM (beginning
of the 19th century). The Empire Style mainly took its forms from classicism
but antiquity did not develop here into a boastful renaissance: in the
difficult conditions of the post-Napoleonic era the Empire Style espoused
a modest, even and classical symmetry and motifs of imitative form. The
severity of the style was relieved to a certain extent by the use of decorative
mounts, Egyptian caryatids, sphinxes, lions paws and dazzlingly polished
mahogany. |
