Lanišče nearby Kalce settlement is the site of a restored part of a Roman wall and fort which used to be part of a Roman defence system known as Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. This late Roman barrier system was intended to protect the heart of the Roman Empire from invasions by tribes from the east.
The archaeological site at Lanišče features a well-preserved late Roman fortification (a rectangular tower) situated on the road leading from Logatec toward Hrušica. This defensive line was strategically placed to control the passage through the mountain passes. Today, the restored masonry provides a unique insight into the engineering skills of the Roman military in the 3rd and 4th centuries.
Surrounded by the forests of the Logatec plateau, Lanišče represents one of the most important cultural heritage sites in the region for those interested in Ancient Rome. The site is part of a larger historical trail connecting various remains of the Claustra system across Slovenia.
