Vratca (1802 m) is a prominent mountain pass and viewpoint in the central part of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, situated on the ridge above the former Čedca Waterfall, which—until its collapse in 2008—was the highest waterfall in Slovenia. The ridge rising above the upper part of the Ravenska Kočna valley forms a natural barrier between the northern walls of Kočna and the southern slopes leading toward Kokrsko sedlo. Because of its position, Vratca serves as an important orientation point in this section of the high mountains, offering exceptional views of the steep faces of the surrounding two‑thousand‑metre peaks, including Jezerska Kočna, Kokrska Kočna, Grintovec, and Dolška škrbina.

Geographical setting

Vratca lie on a distinct ridge pass between Kočna and Dolška škrbina, directly above the site where the Čedca Waterfall once plunged into the valley. The ridge is relatively narrow, bordered on both sides by steep scree slopes and rocky steps typical of the northern Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Owing to its open position, the pass offers wide views northwards into Ravenska Kočna and southwards toward high‑mountain meadows and rocky terraces leading to Kokrsko sedlo.

Access from Češka koča

The ascent to Vratca from Češka koča (1542 m) is relatively short but requires good fitness and a steady step, as the route crosses steep and partly exposed terrain:

  • From the hut, the trail climbs across grassy and scree‑covered slopes toward the base of Kočna.

  • It continues with a traverse beneath the northern walls of Kočna, where some sections are secured with steel cables.

  • The final part ascends a steep scree gully leading directly to the Vratca pass.

  • The total walking time from Češka koča is approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on conditions and the hiker’s experience.

The route is of medium technical difficulty, but in wet or snowy conditions it can become considerably more demanding due to slippery scree and exposed sections.

Significance and experience

Thanks to its position and panoramic views, Vratca are a popular destination for high‑mountain explorers, experienced mountaineers, and lovers of the Alpine world. From the pass, one can admire the impressive northern walls of Kočna, the deep Ravenska Kočna valley, and the rugged ridges rising toward Grintovec and Dolška škrbina. Vratca also serve as an important starting point or passage for more demanding tours, such as the ascent of Kočna or the traverse toward Kokrsko sedlo.
