Veliki Rogatec (1557 m) – also known as Mrtvi menih (“Dead Monk”) or Veliki rogač – is a striking, pyramid‑shaped peak on the southeastern edge of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Its steep slopes, sharp ridges, and prominent silhouette make it one of the most distinctive mountains in the eastern part of the range.
Geographical setting
Veliki Rogatec rises above the Lučka Bela valley and Gornji Grad, in the transitional zone where the high mountains of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps merge with the pre‑Alpine hills of the Menina Plateau. From the summit, wide views open toward:
-
the northern peaks of Raduha, Olševa, and Peca,
-
the central two‑thousand‑metre summits of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps,
-
the southern slopes of the Menina Plateau and the Zadrečka Valley,
-
the eastern foothills of the Konjiško and Vitanjsko hills.
Its isolated, conical shape is easily recognisable from many surrounding valleys.
Geology
The mountain is composed of Triassic limestones and dolomites, typical of the southeastern Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Tectonic uplift and intense weathering have shaped:
-
steep, rocky northern slopes,
-
sharp ridges and rock steps,
-
grassy terraces and open slopes on the southern side.
Veliki Rogatec is a characteristic example of high‑mountain karst, where rocky outcrops, scree slopes, and grassy ridges intertwine.
History and names
The name Mrtvi menih (“Dead Monk”) comes from local tradition, which interprets the mountain’s silhouette as the figure of a reclining monk. The name Veliki rogač refers to the horn‑like shape of the ridge rising above the valley.
Historically, the peak served as an orientation point for shepherds and foresters. Today it is a popular destination for hikers seeking a combination of panoramic views, challenging terrain, and a sense of remoteness.
