Velika Koroška Baba (2127 m) is a prominent, panoramic, and geomorphologically striking peak in the central Kamnik–Savinja Alps. It rises on the ridge that separates Ravenska Kočna to the west from Belska Kočna to the east. At Jezersko Saddle, the ridge begins to ascend toward Ledinski vrh (2108 m), continues over Velika Koroška Baba and Mala Koroška Baba, and gradually descends toward Goli vrh (1788 m). The summits of Velika and Mala Koroška Baba are connected by a narrow, partly exposed ridge that gives the area a distinctly high‑mountain character.

Geographical setting

Velika Koroška Baba stands in the northern part of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, above two deeply incised alpine valleys:

  • Ravenska Kočna to the west, leading toward Češka koča and the Ledine plateau,

  • Belska Kočna to the east, descending toward Zgornje Jezersko.

The peak lies on the watershed between the Kokra and Bela river basins, which gives it exceptional panoramic value. From the summit, views extend:

  • northwards toward Jezersko, Virnikov Grintovec, and the Karawanks,

  • westwards to the steep northern walls of Kočna, Grintovec, and Dolška škrbina,

  • southwards toward Mlinarsko sedlo, Skuta, and the central ridge of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps,

  • eastwards toward Goli vrh, Pristovški Storžič, and the Savinja Alps.

Geomorphology and geology

The ridge is composed of Triassic limestones and dolomites, heavily fractured and subject to intense karst and periglacial weathering. The landscape is shaped by:

  • steep grassy‑rocky slopes,

  • narrow, exposed ridges,

  • rock steps and small walls,

  • scree slopes formed by freeze‑thaw disintegration,

  • small karst depressions and dolines on gentler grassy sections.

The ridge between Ledinski vrh and Goli vrh is a classic example of high‑mountain relief, shaped by a combination of tectonic uplift, glacial modification, and post‑glacial corrosion.

Access

Several routes lead to Velika Koroška Baba, differing in difficulty and starting points:

1. From Ravenska Kočna via Češka koča and Ledine

  • The most traditional and popular approach.

  • From Češka koča, the trail ascends toward the Ledine plateau and continues to Ledinsko sedlo, where it joins the ridge.

  • From the saddle, the route follows a scenic ridge to the summit.

  • Walking time: 3–4 hours.

  • Moderately demanding, with some exposed sections.

2. From Zgornje Jezersko via Jezersko Saddle

  • The trail climbs to Jezersko Saddle, then follows the ridge toward Ledinski vrh and onward to Velika Baba.

  • Walking time: 3–3.5 hours.

  • A panoramic and less frequented route.

3. Ridge traverse from Mala Koroška Baba

  • A short but exposed ridge connection.

  • Suitable only for experienced mountaineers.

  • Offers outstanding views on both sides of the ridge.

Experience and significance

Velika Koroška Baba combines:

  • exceptional panoramic views,

  • a strong high‑mountain atmosphere,

  • accessibility from two alpine valleys,

  • the possibility of extended ridge traverses (e.g., Ledinski vrh – Velika Baba – Mala Baba – Goli vrh).

Its position makes it an excellent destination for exploring the northern Kamnik–Savinja Alps, offering a quieter and more solitary experience than the more frequently visited peaks nearby.
