Robanov kot is an approximately 5.5‑kilometre‑long glacially reshaped Alpine valley, one of the most beautiful and best‑preserved mountain valleys in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. It lies between Luče in the south (Podvolovjek) and Solčava in the north, where it connects to the area of Logarska dolina. Because of its pronounced glacial form, cultural landscape, and exceptional natural preservation, Robanov kot is considered one of the most characteristic examples of Alpine cultural landscape in Slovenia.

Geographical setting and relief

The valley is oriented southwest–northeast and gradually narrows toward its upper cirque, dominated by the imposing Ojstrica (2350 m), one of the most striking peaks of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Its northern wall forms a dramatic backdrop above the upper part of the valley.

Along the valley floor flows the torrential Bela stream, a left tributary of the Savinja River, running in a SW–NE direction. Bela forms gravel deposits, pools, and small rapids, typical of high‑mountain streams with highly variable discharge that rises rapidly during snowmelt or heavy rainfall.

Glacial formation of the valley

Robanov kot is a distinctly U‑shaped glacial valley, carved during the Pleistocene by a glacier descending from beneath Ojstrica and the surrounding peaks. The glacier:

  • deepened the valley floor,

  • shaped steep, smoothly polished slopes,

  • created characteristic glacial steps,

  • left behind extensive moraine deposits.

Because of these processes, the valley is broad in its lower part and narrows into a pronounced glacial amphitheatre toward its head.

Cultural landscape

Robanov kot is also known for its well‑preserved Alpine cultural landscape, featuring:

  • isolated mountain farms and pastures (e.g., the Roban farm),

  • extensive mountain meadows,

  • traditional grazing areas,

  • a mosaic of forest and grassland.

The valley remains a living cultural space where traditional land use is still maintained, giving it a distinctive and authentic character.

Protected area

Since 1987, Robanov kot has been protected as a landscape park. The park covers 1423 hectares and includes:

  • the area from the Savinja River,

  • the entire valley along the torrential Bela stream,

  • the upper cirque beneath Ojstrica and the neighbouring peaks.

The protection aims to preserve:

  • the exceptional natural landscape,

  • traditional cultural land use,

  • biodiversity,

  • geomorphological features of the glacially shaped Alpine environment.

Because of its tranquillity, natural beauty, and unspoiled character, Robanov kot is one of the most valuable parts of the Solčava region.
