Kriška gora (1473 m)

VR virtual excursion 360°

Kriška gora (III.) lies within the third area of the author‑defined regional system KSA – Kamniško‑Savinja Alps, as presented on the website mojaslovenija.si. The designation (III.) marks a spatial unit within this regionalization and is not part of the mountain’s name. The KSA (III.) area covers the western section of the range, where the alpine landscape descends toward the Gorenjska Plain and the Udin boršt plateau.

Within this framework, Kriška gora forms a distinct, approximately 2.6‑kilometre‑long ridge extending from west to east – from the Kriška gora mountain hut (1473 m), across the saddle Vrata (1591 m), to Tolsti vrh (1715 m), the highest point of the ridge. The ridge is open, grassy, and highly panoramic, representing a characteristic transition between the pre‑Alpine and Alpine landscapes.

From the ridge, exceptionally wide views open toward the Ljubljana Basin, the Gorenjska Plain, the Julian Alps with Triglav, and to the north toward the Karavanke and the entire Košuta ridge. Due to its position above Golnik, Kriška gora often rises above the morning inversion layer, which enhances the sense of spaciousness and visibility.

Mountain Hut and Cultural Landscape

On the western edge of the ridge stands the Kriška gora mountain hut, one of the most visited mountain shelters in the Gorenjska region. It is accessible throughout the year and is a popular winter destination for hikers seeking views above the fog. The hut serves as the starting point for the ridge route toward Tolsti vrh and for the connection toward Storžič.

The southern slopes were historically covered with numerous hay meadows, regularly mown by local farmers. This traditional land use shaped today’s open cultural landscape, which is now maintained primarily through grazing.

Vrata and Tolsti vrh

Vrata (1591 m) is a natural break in the ridge where the path briefly levels out, offering views northward toward Storžič and Tržič. From there, the ridge rises toward Tolsti vrh, one of the finest viewpoints in the western part of the KSA. In clear weather, the panorama stretches from the Julian Alps to the Notranjska region and Mount Snežnik.

Significance within the KSA (III.) Area

Within the KSA, Kriška gora is an important transitional ridge between the higher massifs (Storžič, Košuta) and the lower pre‑Alpine hills. Due to its panoramic character, accessibility, and cultural landscape, it is one of the most recognizable features of the western Kamniško‑Savinja Alps.
