Planina Ravne is one of the key high‑mountain pastures on the southern margin of the Dleskovška plateau. Situated on a broad, grassy terrace at roughly 1500–1550 metres, it occupies a transitional zone between the upper forest belt and the open, undulating karst surface of the plateau. This position gives the pasture a dual identity: it is both part of the centuries‑old pastoral system of Luče and a natural gateway into one of the most distinctive high‑mountain karst landscapes in Slovenia.
Because of its accessibility, panoramic openness, and proximity to numerous peaks, Planina Ravne is today one of the most important starting points for exploring the Dleskovška plateau. From here, well‑established routes lead toward Korošica, Dleskovec, Tolsti vrh, Deska, Vežica, Lučki Dedec, and deeper into the plateau’s interior, where extensive grasslands and clusters of dolines dominate the landscape.

The Dleskovška Plateau: Landscape Framework of Planina Ravne
The Dleskovška plateau (traditional local name “Veža”) is a high‑mountain karst plateau in the east‑central part of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. It covers approximately 25 km², rising from elevations around 1500 metres to a series of rounded summits and prominent ridge peaks. Characteristic summits include:
• Rounded peaks: Vršiči (1980 m), Dleskovec (1969 m), Tolsti vrh (1986 m), Deska (1970 m)
• Ridge and boundary peaks: Vežica (1965 m), Lučki Dedec (2023 m), Polšakove Device (2028 m), Križevnik (1910 m)
• Highest saddle‑shaped summit: Veliki vrh – Velika Zelenica (2110–2114 m)
Such pronounced vertical relief is unusual for a plateau, making the Dleskovška plateau one of the most geomorphologically intriguing areas of the Slovenian high mountains. The modern name derives from Dleskovec (1969 m), located in the central part of the plateau.

Geographical Boundaries and Relief Structure

Including its slopes, the plateau covers roughly 45 km². Its boundaries are clearly defined:
• South: the Podvolovjek valley (586 m), through which flows the Lučnica, a left tributary of the Savinja
• West: the 5.6‑kilometre Lučka Bela valley
• Northwest: the Presedljaj pass (1613 m)
• Northeast: the ridge over Vežica (1965 m) and Lučki Dedec (2023 m) toward the Korošica mountain field
• North: beneath Mala Ojstrica (2017 m), the plateau turns toward Molička planina and the cave near the Kocbek shelter
• North‑northeast: the rocky prominence of Molička peč (1829 m), known for the chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius
• Northern escarpment: a six‑kilometre‑long cliff, more than 1000 metres high, dropping steeply into Robanov kot
• East: the Savinja valley, which at Luče receives its right tributary Lučnica from Podvolovjek
The highest summit east of Molička peč is Velika Zelenica (2114 m), followed northeast by the striking rock towers of the Polšakove Device (2028 m and 1879 m). The northeastern escarpment is closed by Križevnik (1910 m).

Karst Terrain and Natural Features

The Dleskovška plateau is a textbook example of high‑mountain karst, characterised by:
• larch forests up to the upper tree line
• rugged karst relief with dolines, closed depressions, and collapse features
• deep shafts such as Zadnikovo brezno, Ledena devica, Brezno pod Moličko pečjo, and Brezno sv. Vida
• extensive cave systems beneath the surface
• absence of surface streams, as water drains rapidly into the karst subsurface
This interplay of karst and periglacial processes creates a landscape that is both visually open and orientationally demanding.

Planina Ravne within the Plateau’s Cultural Landscape

Planina Ravne is one of several traditional alpine pastures on the plateau, alongside:
• Vodole
• Jezerca
• Podvežak
• Molička planina
Together, these pastures form a cultural landscape shaped by centuries of seasonal grazing. Pastoral activity maintained open grasslands, created a mosaic of vegetation, and established the characteristic identity of the plateau.
Historically, Planina Ravne was valued for:
• its favourable grazing grounds,
• easy access from the Luče valley,
• its proximity to Korošica,
• its role as a starting point for mountain routes.
Today, it remains one of the most popular entry points for visitors, offering:
• quick access to Korošica,
• traverses toward Dleskovec, Tolsti vrh, and Deska,
• ascents toward Vežica and Lučki Dedec,
• connections toward Molička planina and the northern escarpment.

Planina Ravne as a Starting Point for Hikers and Mountaineers

The plateau is interwoven with marked and well‑maintained trails, enabling:
• easy ascents of two‑thousand‑metre peaks,
• entry into the heart of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps,
• full traverses of the Dleskovška plateau,
• connections to Robanov kot, Luče, and Podvolovjek.
Because of its central location, Planina Ravne functions as one of the main trail hubs of the plateau.
