Pisais a town inTuscany and the capital of the Pisa province. The town is situated at the banks of theArno River, 11 kilometers from the outflow of the river into theLigurian Sea.Pisa is worldwide known for its 56 m high Leaning Tower, which is a bell tower of the Cathedral. The tower was built in the 12th century and the construction of the tower began leaning to the southeast very soon, although the tower presently leans to the southwest and now leans at about 3.99°. In a period from 1990 to 2001 the tower structure was straightened and nowadays it is again open for a tourist visit. While theLeaning Tower of Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli is world-famous there are two more leaning towers in Pisa: one is the Bell Tower of the church Chiesa di San Nicola and other church tower that failed to remain vertical is a few kilometers to the east, by the Chiesa di San Michele degli Scalzi. |
