Geographic Location and Accessibility
Fridrihštajn Castle rises atop a 970-meter-high rocky hill south of Kočevje, on Mount Stojna. Due to its elevation, it is considered the highest-situated castle in Slovenia. Its location was chosen not only for strategic advantage but for privacy and tranquility, surrounded by the dense forests of the region.
A Fortress of Love and Tragedy
Built between 1423 and 1425 by Frederick II of Celje, the castle served as a refuge for his beloved Veronika of Desenice. Their relationship sparked a fierce dynastic conflict with Frederick's father, Hermann II, who accused Veronika of witchcraft and eventually had her killed. Fridrihštajn remains a symbol of an eternal love that defied the social norms of the Middle Ages.

Architecture and Heritage
The castle was cleverly adapted to the rocky terrain. Today, only parts of the walls, foundations, and remnants of the tower remain. It is a popular destination for hikers, situated within the Kočevje primeval forest area, and is protected as an immovable monument of local importance.
Cultural Symbolism
Beneath the castle ruins, stonemasons are said to have carved two seats into the rock — a symbol of the lovers' seats, reflecting a story that has transitioned from history into folklore and literature.
