Le Puy de Dôme is a 1464 m high mountain located 8 km west from Clermont-Ferrand. The mountain is not active volcano raising 400 m from the base in the Chaîne des Puys region of Massif Central in South-Central France. The area with the chain of not active volcanoes and with many cinder cones, lava domes and volcanic lakes - maars is geologically interesting as it is located away from the edge of any tectonic plate. On the summit of the Puy de Dôme are ruins of the Roman temple dedicated to Mercury. |
