Lac de Serre-Ponçon

is one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. The lake gathers the waters of the Durance and the Ubaye rivers, flowing down as Durance River the Rhône River. The lake was dammed by the 123 m high dam "Barrage de Serre-Ponço". The construction of the lake started in 1955 and was finished by 1961. The purpose of the dam was to control water flow after disastrous floods caused severe damage and loss of life in 1843 and 1856.
