The funerarly temple of Queen Hatshepsut (New kingdom, 18. dynasty, ~ 1475 B.C.). Hatshepsut was the only female pharoah of Egypt, ruling as a man. There have been other female rulers, but only Hatshepsut was pharoah. The temple is a building with three levels sunk into the side of the natural amphitheatre in the cliff. There is another temple complex belonging to Montuhotep I. alongside the Queen Hatshepsut temple, but that temple appears as mostly rubble, and has not been reconstructed. |
